Pre--wedding rituals – What happens in the Sindhi culture?
The
Sindhi people have some pre-wedding rituals before the marriage. They are as
follows:
Janya – Janya
is believed to be the holy thread ceremony. The bride has to wear yellow thread
around his waist and shoulders in the Sindhi tradition. The priest chants guru
mantra in the groom’s ears. According to the old custom, Janya ceremony is
usually done in the adolescence period. However, Janya is usually conducted one
or two day before marriage these days.
Kachchi misri
– Kachchi misri is the unofficial engagement in the Sindhi culture. In it, the
bride as well as the groom is given candid sugar and coconut which is a
symbolic recognition of the marriage.
Pakki mishri
– Pakki mishri is actually the formal engagement. The bride and the groom
exchange rings in front of the priest. After this, there is Ganesh pooja and
then the Ardas.
Dev Bithana
– Just before 5-6 days of wedding, a goddess of stone dicer is put in the
bride’s and the groom’s house. The priest performs the Banwa in which the
family members put tilak on the stone dicer.
Lada – During the
Lada ceremony, the groom’s family asks the women of the neighbouring areas to
come and sing songs on the dholak beats.
Tih – Tih is
usually done a day before the marriage. In this, the priest brings rice, nine
dates, a coconut, sugar, 21 candid sugar bars, green silk yarn and some spices from
the bride’s end.
Saanth – Saanth is
conducted at the bride’s and the groom’s houses. The priest ties ankle around
the right foot of the bride and the groom. After this, seven women who are
already married, put oil on the bride’s and the groom’s head. The bride and the
groom have to wear a new shoe on the right foot along with earthen lamp.
Mehendi and Sangeet
– The bride applies heena on the feet and the hands during the marriage. The female
members in the bride’s family and her friends also put henna on the hands. Sangeet
is held where the women sit together and sing traditional songs of marriage. This
way, they wish the new couple a happy married life.
